v/a DON'T STOP: RECORDING TAP CD

v/a TROPICALIA: Ou Panis Et Circensis LP

DIRTBOMBS Play Sparks 7"
*** "Detroit's Dirtbombs pay homage to label-mates (and one of their favorite bands) Sparks." Side A: "Sherlock Holmes" Side B: "Nothing To Do"

HOWLIN RAIN Magnificent Fiend LP
*** "By turns pummeling and pastoral, Magnificent Fiend oscillates between roaring, all-stops-out, Hammond organ-driven tracks and delicate electric piano passages, topped by harmonized, often dissonant guitar lines, held together by Miller's distinctive, crushed-velvet roar."
JOKERS OF THE SCENE Y'all Know The Name 12"
*** "Canadian selectors-turned-producers JOKERS OF THE SCENE (aka DJ BOOTH & CHAMELEONIC) drop a bomb with a massive club re-work of Pharoahe Monch. This one firmly establishes the JOTS sound: huge build ups, distorted bass and full on rave-age."
KID CUDI Day 'N' Nite 12"

TITTSWORTH & AYRES Ultimate T&A 12"
*** "A collection of Baltimore club remixes of funk classics courtesy of DJ AYRES (Jimmy Castor Bunch’s “Go Back”), A-TRAK (Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke”), TITTSWORTH (Ray Charles’ “Georiga” and EW&F’s “September”), DJ ELI (James Brown’s “Papa”), and BAMABOUNCE (Minnie Ripperton’s “Lovin’ You”)."

VAN MORRISON Keep It Simple CD
*** He's back and he's bald! Of course, that has nothing to do with music (although I suppose it might inform it in a way), this is Van Morrison, so it's great.
KELLEY POLAR I Need You To Hold On CD

VALET Naked Acid CD
*** "Naked Acid is the second solo release from Portland artist Valet, aka Honey Owens Inspired by the Pacific Northwest landscape, semi-conscious dream states and the idea of one's dna code being accessed as eternal memory. v/a MELODII TUVI: Throat Songs and Folk Tunes from Tuva CD
*** "Recordings from 1969 of Tuvan folk music and throat-singing. In khoomei, the singer simultaneously produces two more distinct musical notes: a low, sustained bass note and a flute-like higher note. The effect is hypnotic, eerie, and drone-like, unlike any sound you've heard come out of a cowboy."
v/a NIGERIA SPECIAL: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Nigerian Blues, 1970-1976 CD
*** "Nigeria Special is a truly in-depth, double album look at Nigerian music in the early to mid-'70s, encompassing a broad range of styles. This compilation presents some of the best un-reissued and forgotten sounds from Nigeria, covering the everything from highlife, jazz, Afro-beat and blues to more traditional styles."
DAVID AXELROD Seriously Deep CD
*** RECOMMENDED "One of the rarest albums ever from funky maestro David Axelrod. There's a subtle dose of fusion in the mix, but one that's never too jamming. The album's a favorite of sample hounds and crate diggers, and is incredibly hard to find on vinyl."
B-52s Funplex CD
*** "Loud sexy rock and roll with the beat pumped up to hot pink!"
RHYS CHATHAM Guitar Trio Is My Life 3xCD
*** "Utilizing multiple electric guitars and a single chord, 1977's Guitar Trio is composer Rhys Chatham's signature work, and a euphoric, minimal-punk classic. Now, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Guitar Trio on an epic scale, Chatham musters an all-star guitar army for the 3CD set, Guitar Trio Is My Life! The sprawling collection features members of Sonic Youth, Swans, Tortoise, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hüsker Dü, Modern Lovers, Silver Mt. Zion, Town and Country, Die Kreutzen, 90-Day Men, Collections of Colonies of Bees, and many more; even Tony Conrad gets in on the act."
CLARK Ted EP CD
*** "The title track 'Ted' is complimented by an otherworldly remix by lauded producer BIBIO. The Body Riddle reinterpretations offer some pretty psychedelic parallels and the new tracks meld together to complete this richly textured EP." CD includes a video.
GHOSTFACE KILLAH The Wallabee Champ CD
*** It's been about four LONG months since Ghostface put out his last album. It's about time he dropped a new one! Now, this guy has made few mis-steps to check it out.
GNARLS BARKLEY The Odd Couple CD
*** Perhaps you've heard of them! DANGERMOUSE and CEE-LO are back with what's talked up to be a bar-raising effort above their debut.
GUILTY SIMPSON Ode To The Ghetto CD
*** "...with MR. PORTER, MADLIB, OH NO, J DILLA, BLACK MILK, and SEAN P."
LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR War Battle Metal Master CD
*** "A concept album about solving conflicts with a big f*cking axe! A mix of thrashing aggression, mega-riffage and unrelenting beatings. Emotionless ferocity performed with the razor percision of an executioner."
DANIEL LANOIS Here Is What Is CD
*** Producer and lapsteel player, Mr. Lanois, returns with another set of beautiful, slightly spacey tunes.
THE RACONTEURS Consolers Of The Lonely CD
*** Jack White, Brendan Benson, and some other guys from some other band get it on for a follow-up to their much-lauded debut.
SOUND DIMENSION Mojo Rocksteady Beat CD
*** "Classic recordings from the funkiest group in the history of reggae! As the in-house band at Studio One in the late 1960s, Sound Dimension recorded some of the most important songs -- the 'foundation' of reggae music, endlessly versioned and re-versioned by Jamaican artists."
BRUNO SPOERRI Glückskugel CD
*** RECOMMENDED "CAN-collaborator Bruno Spoerri's first collection of embryonic pre-Nintendo sprite-themes, music for engineering companies, and motivational music for industrial sites and factories utilising concrete techniques, primitive sampling techniques and contemporary experimental psych-rock and funk musicians."
THEE SILVER MT. ZION 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons CD
*** "The music of the full band (two guitars, two violins, cello, contrebasse and drums) has grown louder, looser, full of spittle and tears. Riffs are the backbone more than ever and the band has never rocked harder and has never sounded more determined, desperate and driven."
T.P. ORCHESTRE POLY-RHYTHMO The Kings of Benin: Urban Groove 1972-80 CD
*** "From the Republic of Benin, West Africa, T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo is one of Africa's least-known big-bands outside of their home country. A mixture of hard Afro-Funk, driving Afrobeat, deep Afro-Latin and Cuban grooves all with a unique flavor that ruled the dance-floors of 70's urban Benin."
WOLF EYES & JOHN WEISE Collection CD
*** "This CD is a collection of the Wolf Eyes w/ John Wiese 7" and two CD-Rs originally released in very limited editions on American Tapes in 2003-04. Digitally re-mastered by Wiese this year, and finally available all together."
JOHN ZORN The Dreamers CD
*** "Continuing in the tradition of his popular album, The Gift, Zorn again combines a lifetime of musical passions -- world music, movie soundtracks, jazz, minimalism, exotica, funk, surf rock and more -- to create a vibrant and multi-faceted album of instrumental fairy tales."

((((( NEW ARRIVALS: CDs ))))) Clark, Destroyer, J Dilla, She & Him
BLACK MILK Sound Of The City CD
*** "Possibly the freshest and finest debut to come out of Detroit since "The Slim Shady EP" and "Fantastic Vol. 1." Black Milk is the real deal, especially on the beats but also on the mic, with a raw, gritty, and energetic style that could only come from Detroit."
CLARK Turning Dragon 2xLP / CD
*** "Hard, deep, continuously evolving and gritty tracks, aimed at contorting your body on the dance floor or just contorting your brain. This is an album that you could almost call techno, but techno with the a.d.d. detail pushed as far as it can go."
MATTHEW DEAR Asa Breed (Black Edition) CD
*** Expanded version of Matthew Dear's lauded 2007 release including remixes by HOT CHIP and FOUR TET. For a limited time, buy the CD and get a copy of Dear's 'Deserter' 10"!

FAT RAY & BLACK MILK The Set Up LP / CD
*** "Black Milk somehow seems to be getting better and better in a ridiculously short period of time. "The Set Up" continues his string of incredible releases, this time with dope MC, Fat Ray. Take one listen to "Take Control" and you'll be hooked."

J.ROCC Thank You Jay Dee Vol. 2 CD
*** "J.Rocc continues where the first one left off, and this time he has equally impressive song selection. Again a special note should be made of the beautiful artwork included. Start collecting them now, because one day these will probably be the definitive Dilla mixes."
J DILLA Jay Love Japan CD
*** "After nearly a year of this release in limbo, one of J-Dilla's last projects before he died is available. Mostly instrumental (who's complaining?), a few of the songs feature guests such as Baatin (of Slum Village) and Ta'Raach."
THE KILLS Midnight Boom CD
*** "This duo subtly and organically fuses pop, glam, blues, art-punk, and hip-hop in a manner that flits between light and dark, funny and morbid, experimental and cute. The result is a short, sharp twelve track album of sensual, fresh, and atmospheric songs."
KAKI KING Dreaming Of Revenge CD
*** "King's most accessible CD yet. 'Even though half the tracks are instrumentals, I feel like I'm writing pop songs,' she says. 'We really concentrated on the melodies. Everything I write tends to be dense and chordal, but this time the idea was to layer the challenging guitar work under very simple, beautiful melodies. I really wanted them to be memorable.'"

EARTH The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull CD
*** "Where 'Hex' reveled in dark satanic twang and austere american beauty, "The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull" finds Dylan Carlson and the band growing into a harder, more rock, american Gospel and impovisitory direction framed by truly psychedelic production and blazing guitar sounds. BILL FRISELL appears on a few tracks, providing brilliant textures and counterpoint to the scintillating and inspired riffs of Dylan Carlson and the band. Steve Moore also returns adding heavy hammond organ and his intense jazz inspired piano playing."
FLOGGING MOLLY Float CD
*** Powerhouses, I'll tell you what. These guys, that is.

INSTRUMENTS OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY Music For The Films Of R/Swift CD
*** "For the critical listener, Instruments of Science & Technology sounds like Brian Eno and Wendy Carlos had a love child in the 70's and subsequently marooned him/her/it on an Oort Cloud. Swift has resurrected the earliest forms of electronic music, thrown in a few dashes of dub, hip-hop, kraut-rock, and Motown--and created a new hybrid dish."

(( RECOMMENDED: NEW RELEASES )) Growing, Instruments Of Science & Technology
GROWING Lateral 12" / CDEP"A kaleidosope of prismatic tones and juddering electronics forming a series of mesmeric constellations."
With albums on Kranky and Troubleman Unlimited, this Brooklyn duo has jumped to The Social Registry for an EP of stuttering light and minimalist beauty. The thick drone that characterized their albums on Kranky has subsided and made way for the choppy but delicate electronic manipulations.
INSTRUMENTS OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY Music From The Films Of R/Swift CD"For the critical listener, INST sounds like Brian Eno and Wendy Carlos had a love child in the 70's and subsequently marooned him/her/it on an Oort Cloud.
"With Instruments of Science and Technology, Swift has resurrected the earliest forms of electronic music, thrown in a few dashes of dub, hip-hop, kraut-rock, and Motown--and created a new hybrid dish."
A peculiar album completely removed from the last few decades. This could easily fit alongside Broadcast albums, BBC Radiophonic recordings, and library records if you wanted something a little darker in your diet.
